The Baodi District Emergency Management Bureau in Tianjin, China, stated on June 21 that a gas explosion occurred in Baodi District, injuring 23 people.
At 16:45 (Beijing time) on June 21, a large explosion occurred near the intersection between Beicheng East Road and Wusu Road in Baodi District, Tianjin.
People near the explosion quickly videoed the scene.
One video depicting the scene of the explosion shows a very messy situation. The building’s windows were blown out. Shards of glass littered the ground. A person who appeared to have been injured was still lying on the road.
The blast injured 23 people. Three suffered severe burns and are being treated in a professional care hospital. Fifteen people with minor injuries were hospitalized for monitoring and treatment, and five people with minor injuries were treated and discharged from the hospital.
Another video shows the impact of the explosion was quite significant. It caused damage to the houses opposite and their doors were even broken.
A trader near the blast scene, Niu 牛, told Tianmu News’ reporter, “I heard a loud bang, and the roof bounced off.” He added that the explosion was very powerful even though he was still 100 meters away from the explosion’s location and the shock still strongly affected him.
Another trader nearby, Liu 刘, said there was construction work near the scene. She suspected a construction vehicle had hit a gas pipeline, causing the gas to leak and explode.
Officials from the Baodi County Emergency Management Office said the death toll was unknown and there would be a press conference on the matter in the near future.
The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.
Tianjin’s June 21 explosion was reminiscent of two other explosions in the city in 2015.
A fire broke out in the Tianjin Yongsheng Chemical Co., Ltd. warehouse in Xititou Village, Xititou Town, Tianjin City on October 12, 2015. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
The warehouse where the accident happened was a storage facility for ammonia and alcohol, and it was unlicensed.
Another massive explosion occurred at the dangerous goods warehouse of Ruihai Company in Tianjin Port, Xinhai District, Tianjin on August 12, 2015. The total explosive energy in the accident was equivalent to 450 tons of TNT.
Mainland media said that explosion left 165 people dead, eight missing, and 798 injured. The economic damage caused by the accident amounted to more than $1 billion, which is considered a particularly serious production safety accident.
However, Chinese-language media Da Ji Yuan claimed that the Tianjin government pushed back the death toll in the August 12 explosion.
The armed police and fire department that attended the scene and first-line hospitals released data that said by noon on August 15, 2015, over 1,400 people had died, and more than 700 people were missing due to the explosion. This figure does not include bodies treated at the scene and those being treated in hospitals far from the accident site.
When reporters asked about the incident, the Tianjin official replied in general that “don’t know, don’t know, don’t understand.”
