Taiwan News reported that China’s military declared it would hold live-fire exercises in six areas surrounding Taiwan. This statement was released at the same time U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a historic visit to Taiwan.
At 10:44 pm on Tuesday, August 2, the U.S. Air Force Boeing C-40C brought Pelosi and the U.S. congressional delegation to Taipei Songshan Airport, Taiwan.
Soon after, at 10:59, Global Times, the China Communist Party’s mouthpiece, released a report that China’s military would begin exercises in six regions around Taiwan from August 4 to 7.
The Chinese military stated that “for safety reasons,” unauthorized ships and aircraft will not be allowed to enter their exercise areas during specified dates.
According to Taiwan News, compared to the live-fire zones during the third strait crisis between 1995 and 1996, the areas where China’s military held exercises this time seemed closer to Taiwan.
In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that Beijing’s exercises as an attempt to “threaten our important ports and urban areas, and unilaterally undermine regional and stability.”
MND added that these exercises would sully China’s international image, and Beijing would face international condemnation.
