Incumbent Speaker of the United States House of Representatives—Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taipei at 10:44 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Songshan Airport, becoming a senior U.S. leader’s first visit to Taiwan in 25 years.

In this regard, the Chinese side continued to make a fuss, shouting in the sky. Departments such as China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, China’s Ministry of National Defense, etc., have condemned this incident. In addition, China also took practical actions, unexpectedly banning the import of more than 100 Taiwanese products at midnight. Furthermore, China’s “Eastern War Zone” also launched a series of military activities around the island nation of Taiwan. This issue has prompted complaints and criticism from Chinese netizens.

After Ms. Pelosi’s plane arrived in Taiwan, Xinhua News Agency issued an authorized statement that the Chinese military “would conduct important military exercises and hold live-fire drills in some waters and airspaces from 12:00 on Aug. 4, 2022, to 12:00 on Aug. 7, 2022, Beijing time.” Xinhua also reminded relevant ships and aircraft not to enter these waters and airspaces during this time.

Later, Consul General Lu Guijun said that the U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan despite China’s firm opposition and solemn representations. It violated China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, undermining the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, and sent a seriously wrong signal to the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.

Next, China’s Taiwan Affairs office also issued a statement saying, “This is an escalation of Taiwan-U.S. collusion, which is very bad in nature and has very serious consequences. This is a serious violation of China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Also, on Aug. 4, CCTV4 reported that Wu Qian, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, in a statement, said that Pelosi “deliberately carried out, maliciously provoked and created the crisis.” Furthermore, he criticized the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan’s invitation to Ms. Pelosi, saying “it will inevitably lead to serious consequences.” Wu Qian also stated that the Chinese military is on high alert and “will launch a series of targeted military operations to counter this.”

Later, Chinese state media Xinhua reported that “the eastern military district will carry out a series of military actions around Taiwan Island, including firing long-range live ammunition in the Taiwan Strait. In addition, they will hold regular fire test launches in the waters east of the island of Taiwan.”

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (abbreviated as the National Committee of Zhengxia) also released a statement about Ms. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, expressing “resolute opposition and strong condemnation.”

In addition, China took some practical actions, such as a sudden ban on imports of more than 100 Taiwanese products at night, explained by the outside world as retaliation for Mrs. Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. At the same time, on social networks, there were reports of many armored vehicles appearing on the beach in Fuzhou, Fujian province, and military vehicles running through the streets. The scene is like war is about to happen.

Twitter account YongKa Standard posted a video and said: “Fujian has played loudspeakers, banning going out at night and to prepare for battle.”

However, Chinese public opinion has had mixed reactions. Vision Times has compiled several comments:

Before Pelosi arrived in Taiwan, Chinese officials, media, and netizens predominantly expressed the same excitement. There is a saying that “when Pelosi landed, it was time to unify Taiwan.” But another netizen commented: “When the plane has not landed, it is rare to say not to fight. Now that the plane has landed, it is rare to say that it wants to fight. (implying that the CCP dares to say but dare not do)

Some netizens complained: “If you want to fight, fight. If you don’t, don’t deface yourself,” “If this can’t be resolved, I’ll really lose faith in the country! Soldiers are even more disappointed…,” “don’t sabotage the enthusiasm of the people in the future. We have to go to bed early to earn money to pay off the mortgage.

Some netizens even complained: “I’m really nauseous, being a Chinese, I’m not only sad but also ashamed tonight!” “Don’t perform any kind of Yun-20, J -20 anymore, no matter how good weapons are if you don’t dare to use them, they are all scrap,” “I’m so angry I can’t sleep.”

Some people are skeptical about the military drills: “In the future, news like this will not become a hot search.” … “Pelosi is the first, if politicians from Western countries all take turns to visit Taiwan in the future, will you do military drills and conduct live fire every time? Save money! Focus on economic construction!”
